There are moments in life when a small decision quietly changes everything. For me, that moment came when I decided to register for a race in 2019. At that time, I had no idea that a simple step toward fitness would turn into a passion for marathon running.
Today, when I look back at the journey from my first race to completing full marathons, I realize that running has given me far more than medals or finish line photos. It has shaped my discipline, strengthened my mindset, and taught me lessons that apply to every part of life.
My journey started with ICT Green Marathon 2019. Like many first-time runners, I registered out of curiosity and a desire to challenge myself.
Before that race, running was never something I had taken seriously. I would occasionally jog for fitness, but the idea of participating in an organized race felt completely different. Suddenly there was a start line, a bib number, and hundreds of runners around me.
I still remember race morning vividly.
The excitement in the air was infectious. People from different age groups and backgrounds had gathered for one common goal: to run. Some runners were experienced athletes, while others were beginners like me.
Standing at the start line, I felt both nervous and excited. I did not know how the race would go. My only goal was simple: finish the race without stopping.
When the race began, the energy of the crowd carried me forward. Volunteers cheered along the route, fellow runners encouraged each other, and every kilometer felt like a small victory.
Crossing the finish line that day was a powerful moment.
It was not about the distance or the timing. It was about realizing that I could push beyond my comfort zone. That finish line planted a seed that would grow into a much bigger running journey.
After completing my first race, something changed.
Running slowly became a regular part of my life. What started as occasional jogs soon turned into structured runs during the week and longer runs on weekends.
The best part about running is its simplicity. All you need is a pair of shoes, an open road, and the willingness to keep moving.
However, the journey was not always easy.
Some mornings it was difficult to wake up early for training. Some runs felt heavy and exhausting. Weather conditions were not always ideal. But every runner knows that consistency matters more than perfection.
Running teaches patience.
You cannot rush improvement. It comes slowly through regular training, discipline, and persistence.
With each passing month, my endurance improved. Distances that once felt difficult became comfortable. The running community also played a big role in keeping me motivated. Sharing experiences with fellow runners, learning from experienced athletes, and participating in races created a sense of belonging.
For many runners, the marathon distance has a special meaning.
The number 42.195 kilometers is more than just a measurement. It represents commitment, discipline, and mental strength.
As my running journey progressed, the idea of running a full marathon began to grow in my mind. Initially it seemed intimidating. Running such a long distance felt almost impossible.
But marathon running is not about sudden leaps. It is about gradual progress.
Training for a marathon required a new level of dedication. Weekly mileage increased. Long runs became longer. Recovery, hydration, and nutrition started to matter much more.
Some weekends meant waking up before sunrise and spending hours on the road. But those long runs slowly built confidence.
Every completed training run felt like another step toward the goal.
Running teaches lessons that extend far beyond sport.
One of the most important lessons is mental strength. During long-distance running, there comes a moment when the body starts to feel tired and the mind begins to question whether you can continue.
Those moments test your determination.
But when you push through that doubt and keep moving forward, you discover a deeper level of resilience.
Running also teaches humility.
Some races go well and bring personal best times. Others are difficult and remind you that progress is never linear. Weather conditions, fatigue, and unexpected challenges can affect performance.
But every race offers something valuable: experience.
Another important lesson from running is balance. Managing training alongside professional and personal responsibilities requires discipline and planning.
Running became a powerful way to manage stress and maintain focus. After a long day of work, a run can clear the mind and restore energy.
Every race morning has its own unique feeling.
Standing at the start line, surrounded by runners who have all trained for months, creates a powerful sense of unity. Everyone has a different story, but the goal is the same: reach the finish line.
The first few kilometers often feel easy because of the excitement and crowd support. But experienced runners know that patience is important.
The real challenge begins later in the race.
Around the later kilometers of a marathon, fatigue sets in and every step requires effort. At that stage, running becomes more mental than physical.
You start remembering your training runs, the early mornings, the sacrifices, and the reason you started this journey in the first place.
And step by step, you keep moving forward.
Crossing the finish line of a marathon is an unforgettable experience.
It is not just relief or happiness. It is a mixture of pride, gratitude, and deep satisfaction.
All the months of preparation, the difficult training runs, and the mental battles come together in that single moment.
When you finally stop the watch and look back at the journey, you realize something important.
The marathon was never only about completing 42 kilometers.
It was about the process of becoming stronger, more disciplined, and more resilient.
Running has now become an essential part of my life.
Each race adds a new chapter to the journey. Some races bring personal bests, while others bring lessons that make future races better.
The beauty of running lies in its endless possibilities. There is always another goal to pursue, another distance to conquer, and another starting line waiting ahead.
What began as a simple step toward fitness in 2019 has grown into a meaningful journey filled with experiences, friendships, and personal growth.
Whenever I lace up my running shoes now, I remember the same thought that guided me from the beginning:
Just keep moving forward.
Because every great running journey begins with a single step.
